What to expect?
Some people are very hesitant about getting a massage because they don’t know what to expect. And for some reason they are afraid to ask. Just remember, if you come in for a massage and are ever uncomfortable, I would rather find out about it right then and there than in a review afterward. This is your massage- we do it YOUR WAY! My ego is not bigger than your comfort.
The first thing I will clarify is that there should never be anything sexual about massage. Yuck. Don’t ask anything else or make jokes- or it will be a problem. This is my profession and I take it seriously.
Who is performing my massage? Well, I am a sole practitioner, meaning I am the only one in my practice, so you get me. I have been doing massage for over 11 years and take pride in connecting with my clients and making them have a great massage experience.
Do I have to completely undress? A lot of people are worried about taking off their clothes. If that is your hold-up, then please, keep them on. I also can perform a great whole body massage with you fully clothed. But, rest assured, I would much rather keep all of your private parts super covered, just as much as you. If you decide to go for the disrobed massage, rest assured, I will give you plenty of private time to undress and redress following your session and I will knock loudly before coming in to make sure you are ready. I use a practice called diaper draping for your legs which means it is tucked under so nothing pops out unexpectedly. And ladies, I have also worked tirelessly over the last 11 years (yikes- I’ve been doing massage for 11 years now) figuring out the right way to pull your arm out from under the sheets without pulling the girls out as well. There will be no exposure or touching of genitals.
When you get there, expect to fill out some paperwork. (or it may be emailed to you ahead of time). This paperwork is so your therapist knows if there are any conditions that need special consideration. Some things you may not even think about are concerning to your massage therapist. Some medicines may affect your ability to receive a massage. Please answer completely and fully, if you have any concerns, please feel free to contact your massage therapist to see.
What will it feel like? Well, depending on your goals for massage and comfort level, massage will feel different for everyone. Generally long strokes with a light lubricating oil- I use fractionated coconut oil, get your ready for deeper techniques such as kneading type strokes or even more firm slow steady strokes. Movement is included in massage as it helps to assess your range of motion and also improves blood flow and the way the muscles can be treated. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE SOMETHING I AM DOING, LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY!!!!
Where do you massage me? Depending on how long of a session you book will determine how much of a “full body” massage you get. But what you get depends on what you need and want as well. In a professional massage setting you can get massaged from head to toe- with the exception of the genital area and a woman’s breasts. You can always ask for more focus on a specific area or to have an area ignored. Surprisingly, some people who think they have ticklish feet will ask to not have their feet worked on, but then will find out that in massage, it is ok, mainly because of the our approach to working on the feet. If you have questions or are uncomfortable, please ask. And you can always say STOP while you are in session.
I booked a 60 minute massage- what does that mean? In my business, unless you are significantly delayed in arriving or take a long time to fill out paperwork, a 60 minute massage means 60 minutes of me working on you. I prefer clients arrive a few minutes before their scheduled session to make certain we have time to complete any administrative stuff before we start. This includes a discussion with you (called an intake) where we determine what you are looking for in the massage and if there are any potential problems you would like addressed during the massage. Some business models include your intake and dressing time in the time of the session, but for me the time you book is the time I will work on you.
Will massage help me if I’m sick? As wonderful as a relaxing massage may sound when you feel down in the dumps, it is not a good thing. Massage is still a stressor on the body and on your immune system. You may feel better, but you may feel a lot worse if you receive body work when you are sick. Also, you risk making your massage therapist sick which could then pass to numerous clients. Best to wait if you are not feeling quite right.
Do you have any other questions? Please feel free to message me directly to work out any questions you have. I may even end up realizing I need to put it in my post here to help everyone out.
